he latest release of DOCLINE, Version 1.6, features links from DOCLINE and Loansome Doc® to free full text articles, whenever the article requested is available in PubMed Central (see related Technical Note DOCLINE 1.6 Released in this issue).
In DOCLINE, the "***Free in PubMed Central***" link now takes users directly to the full text article (see Figure 1).
Note: In a few cases, the link will take the user to the abstract, and then the user must click on the PDF link on the left side of the screen to access the full text of the article (see Figure 2).
DOCLINE's PubMed® Screen
Within DOCLINE, the PubMed screen has the Links feature set so that all links, including the "Free in PMC" link, appear to the right of the authors' names (see Figure 3). If you wish to display Links this way in your own PubMed search session, add "?linkbar=plain" to the end of the PubMed URL (i.e., http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?linkbar=plain).
LocatorPlus
NLM® has changed the call number for titles available in PubMed Central to include the statement, "free in PubMed Central." To find all PubMed Central titles within LocatorPlus, perform a Call Number Search using the phrase electronic link: free in pubmed central. In addition, free titles that are not in PubMed Central can be identified in LocatorPlus by performing a Call Number Search using the phrase electronic link: free at producer site. If NLM knows that the producer site requires user registration to access the free full text articles, the call number will read Electronic link: free at producer site (registration required).
Please Note
If requests are sent to NLM for articles that are free in PubMed Central, NLM will fill the request and charge the usual fee. We hope that users and library staff will use the free link and, thereby, avoid paying for articles that are freely available.
