List of Serials Indexed for Online Users, 2019, Available in XML

The List of Serials Indexed for Online Users (LSIOU), 2019 edition, is now available in XML format. The 2019 edition contains 15,159 serial titles, including 5,257 titles currently indexed for MEDLINE as well as titles indexed over time that have ceased or changed titles. The titles are listed alphabetically by the journal title abbreviation.

Changes to the NLM Serials DTD

Two elements were removed from the NLM Serials DTD in 2019 and as searchable elements in the NLM Catalog: CurrentFormatStatus and AcidFreeYN.

CurrentFormatStatus

This element was removed based on feedback from users that it was misleading and confusing, as the element only tracked the format acquired by NLM and did not necessarily indicate the current format of the publication.

AcidFree data

In 1987, NLM appointed a Permanent Paper Task Force to encourage publishers and printers to use acid-free paper in their publications to preserve permanently the content of biomedical literature. As a result, most biomedical publishers placed an acid-free notice in their publications so libraries would not have to test and inadvertently apply preservation treatments to publications that did not need them. This successful program facilitated the preservation of the printed record in biomedicine and other fields of scholarly endeavor.

Beginning in 1990, journals indexed in MEDLINE and Index Medicus that were printed on acid-free paper and carried a notice to that effect were marked as such in NLM's published journal lists, and in LocatorPlus, the Library's online catalog. As part of this effort, publications that included a printed notice or the ANSI infinity sign were designated and searchable in the NLM Catalog as "AcidFree."

As publishing platforms have evolved from print to online, NLM is acquiring many fewer print serial publications. NLM continues to support the preservation of printed biomedical literature and is retaining the designation in the 583 field of the MARC record, which can be viewed in LocatorPlus. However, NLM has removed "acidfree" as a searchable element in the NLM Catalog.
