ocatorplus Now Using 2002 Medical Subject Headings (MeSH®) MeSH subject terms in LocatorPlus, the online public access catalog module of NLM's Voyager integrated library system, were changed to reflect 2002 MeSH. For a description of the changes, please see the article What's New for 2002 MeSH in this issue. Highlighted below are selected changes that were applied retrospectively against NLM bibliographic records in LocatorPlus and are of particular interest to catalogers.
All MeSH 2002 changes are reflected in the bibliographic records in LocatorPlus, which are also accessed via the NLM Gateway. Use MeSH 2002 when searching for books, journals, audiovisuals, or other resources by MeSH subject in LocatorPlus or in the NLM Gateway. MeSH 2002 is the subject vocabulary for headings in LocatorPlus in the following fields of the bibliographic records:
For more information on how to search for fields in NLM LocatorPlus, see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/services/lpfields.html#heading. Additions to "Cataloging Practices Section" Annotated Alphabetic MeSHUsers are advised to annotate the printed tool, Medical Subject Headings Annotated Alphabetic List 2002, as follows: In the list identified as "PTs used as genres in 655 Genre/Form field" (p. I-133), add the genre terms "Patient Education Handout," "Fictional Works" and "Textbooks." These terms will be included in the list in the next edition of the Medical Subject Headings Annotated Alphabetic List. The publication type "Patient Education Handout" is used for patient education materials intended to be copied and given to the patient. The publication type "Fictional Works" is defined as creative writing, not presented as factual, and is used primarily in the cataloging of historical materials, reprints and fascimiles of historical works and, as desired, by collaborating data producers creating records for LocatorPlus. The publication type "Textbooks" is used primarily by NLM's History of Medicine Division and by collaborating data producers. For more information on how NLM catalogers apply MeSH, see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/catpractices.html. Changes to KIE DescriptorsKeyword descriptor terms assigned by the Kennedy Institute of Ethics (KIE) are carried on bibliographic records in the NLM locally defined subject MARC 21 field 690 and contain the subfield $8 coded with the value "k" for this special producer. Selected keyword descriptor terms were updated to accurately conform to the present Kennedy Institute keyword list. NLM is working with KIE to incorporate the keyword descriptor terms as concepts in the MeSH vocabulary. During year-end processing, MeSH 2002 headings were added retrospectively to the MARC 21 650 field of LocatorPlus bibliographic records that contain KIE keyword descriptors incorporated into the MeSH vocabulary this year. Data Changes in NLM Bibliographic Records for Electronic ResourcesIn conjunction with the adoption of Amendments 2001 to the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition, 1998 revision, NLM changed the general material designations [computer file] and [interactive multimedia] to the new general material designation [electronic resource] on all bibliographic records for electronic resources in the database. Additionally, NLM corrected fixed field coding of MARC 21 field 007 for bibliographic records for electronic resources. These changes appear in LocatorPlus as of December 10, 2001 and appear in NLM MARC 21 distributed records beginning with the weekly distribution of December 13, 2001. Addition to NLM ClassificationNote the following addition to the NLM Classification, 5th edition 1994, rev. 1999 since the publication of this tool in September 2000:
