he National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) has created a new Entrez database, Journals. The new database replaces the PubMed^® Journal Browser and provides additional search and display features. The Journals database is available from the "Search" pull-down menu and from the PubMed sidebar.

Use the Journals database to search for a journal and then link to citations for that journal in PubMed, or the record for the journal in the National Library of Medicine's (NLM's) online catalog, LocatorPlus.

The Entrez Journals database can be searched using the journal title, the MEDLINE/PubMed title abbreviation, the NLM ID (NLM's unique journal identifier), the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) abbreviation, and the print and electronic International Standard Serial Numbers (pISSNs and eISSNs). The following search tags are available: [Title], [MEDLINE Abbr], [NLM ID], [ISO Abbr], and [ISSN]. Unqualified terms are searched in all fields. The database includes all journals in all Entrez databases (e.g., PubMed, Nucleotide, Protein). To limit Journal searches to PubMed journals use the "Only PubMed journals" selection in Limits or include the PubMed journal subset (i.e., journals pubmed [sb]) in your Journal search strategy (see Figure 1).

 

The Summary (default) display includes the journal title, the MEDLINE/PubMed title abbreviation, the NLM ID, the ISO abbreviation, the ISSN(s), and a Links link. The Links menu includes links to the Entrez databases in which citations to the journal are found (see Figure 2). To retrieve items in PubMed, use the PubMed link.

 

In the Journals database, click the journal title from the Summary display or choose Full from the Display pull-down menu to view additional information including: Publication Start Year, Publication End Year, Publisher, Language, and Country of Publication (see Figure 3).

 

On either the Summary or Full display, click the NLM ID to link to the journal's catalog record in LocatorPlus (see Figure 4). LocatorPlus records provide additional information about journals, e.g., dates of MEDLINE^® indexing and the frequency of publication. If the journal continues a previous title or was continued by another title, this information will also be provided. Holdings and MARC View displays are also available in LocatorPlus.
