Claude Bernard, c. 1875

French physiologist and one of the founders of experimental medicine, Claude Bernard (1813–1878) was a commanding figure in the medical milieu of 19th-century Paris. Following his death in February 1878, his heirs auctioned his library, including a collection of contemporary medical pamphlets.
