Reminder: Gratefully Yours Ceases PublicationThe November-December 1998 issue was the final issue of Gratefully Yours. The cover story of Gratefully Yours will be moved to the NLM Newsline (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/nlmnews/nlmnews.html) and the Hands On feature will be published in the NLM Technical Bulletin. Please refer back to the article in the September-October 1998 NLM Technical Bulletin for more information. MEDLINEplusA new consumer health Web site, MEDLINEplus, was launched by NLM in October 1998. The site is accessible from the NLM home page; just click on the button that says MEDLINEplus. You may read the press release about this new consumer resource at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/news/press_releases/medplus.html. Watch for more information about MEDLINEplus in an upcoming issue of the NLM Technical Bulletin. Perpetual TransitionThere was an excellent article by Barbara Frey, a hospital library manager, titled Perpetual Transition: Librarians & Users Move On, (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/gyours/septoct98.html#Perpetual) published in the September-October 1998 issue of Gratefully Yours. This article accurately and succinctly describes the constantly changing world of medical information retrieval and one librarian's adjustment and redefinition of her role in her hospital in light of those changes. If this situation sounds like yours, you will enjoy reading this article. Change in Service Desk HoursAt the beginning of November 1998, a new Customer Service Desk schedule went into effect. Staff are now available to answer your questions by telephone during the hours shown below.
These changes were made to maximize the effective use of staff time and reduce the time it takes for our users to receive a response to their questions. SERLINE File UpdateThe last full update to SERLINE took place on October 3, 1998. There will be a partial update of SERLINE at the end of December consisting only of new journal titles selected for indexing. SERLINE will remain available in ELHILL while NLM is in the process of transitioning to the Integrated Library System (ILS). The ILS will become publicly available through the Web-based Online Public Access Catalog early in the new year. Please refer back to the article titled, Impact of the NLM ILS on CATLINE�/AVLINE�/SERLINE� in the July-August 1998 NLM Technical Bulletin for more detailed information. CANCERLIT File RemovedThe final update to CANCERLIT took place on November 10, 1998 with the addition of data for Entry Month (EM) 9811. This database, along with PDQ, was removed from the NLM computer effective December 14, 1998. Please refer back to the article CANCERLIT� and PDQ� To Be Removed from the NLM Databases - Available from NCI's Web Site in the July-August 1998 NLM Technical Bulletin for more detailed information. RTECS access via the Web DiscontinuedAt the request of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the file producer for the Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS), NLM discontinued free TOXNET Web access to RTECS on November 13, 1998. At the present time, searchers who have NLM-issued User ID codes can continue to access RTECS� via TOXNET direct command searching; users will be billed for these searches. Users can contact NIOSH at 1-800-35-NIOSH or visit the NIOSH Web site ( http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/homepage.html) to find information on registering for other vendor versions of RTECS. New Alternative Medicine Journals Selected for IndexingThe following seven alternative medicine titles have been selected for indexing for Index Medicus/MEDLINE, beginning with the first issue published in 1999:
Special List B Category of Journals EliminatedSpecial List B journals were originally selected for indexing for the defunct BIOTECHSEEK database. The Special List B subset in SERLINE included some journal titles in genetics that were generally considered out of scope for Index Medicus/MEDLINE. Of the 22 titles that were Special List B in June 1998, 12 are now indexed for Index Medicus/MEDLINE. The other ten titles will no longer be indexed by NLM. If you search: b (li) in SERLINE on ELHILL, you will retrieve 16 titles. This retrieval includes the ten titles no longer indexed by NLM as well as additional titles from the Special List B that ceased publication. If you search: b (li) in MEDLINE on ELHILL, you will retrieve all the citations that were part of the BIOTECHSEEK subset until it was discontinued in June 1998. PubMed and IGM Training Available in 1999Please check out the 1999 Training Schedule and register for classes directly from the National Online Training Center Web site, http://www.nnlm.gov/mar/online/. To help you decide which class would be best suited to your needs class description are available as well as Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). PubMed FAQsPubMed's New and Noteworthy column ( http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query/static/new.html) was updated with new information in December 1998. In addition, a new link to Frequently Asked Questions, FAQs, ( http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query/static/faq.html) has been added to the PubMed sidebar next to the Help link. If you do not see HELP/FAQs in the PubMed sidebar, you may be using an old bookmark to reach the PubMed URL. In that case, delete your bookmark (or favorite) and go to the NLM homepage ( http://www.nlm.nih.gov) and click on Search MEDLINE and PubMed and save the updated PubMed URL. NLM Associates ProgramThe National Library of Medicine is pleased to announce the solicitation for proposals from academic health science centers, hospital research facilities, corporations, or other organizations interested in serving as second-year sites for NLM's Associate Fellowship program. Requirements and application procedures are outlined in the Statement of Work and Request For Proposal (RFP) available on NLM's Web site under General Information, Training Opportunities, NLM Second Year Associate Fellowship (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/about/training/associate/index.html). Any questions you may have about this solicitation can be directed to the Acting Associate Fellowship Program Coordinator, Karen Hajarian, at hajarian@nlm.nih.gov or at 301-435-4083. The primary purpose of NLM's Associate Fellowship program is to prepare librarians for future leadership roles in health science libraries. The emphasis of the optional second year of the program is on developing skills and gaining experience working as a team member with librarians, administrators, health professionals, system developers, and/or educators in a multi-disciplinary host institution. Proposals are due no later than close of business on Friday, January 15, 1999. We hope that you will consider submitting a proposal.
