New Version of NLM Gateway Released - September 5, 2001On September 5, 2001, a new version of the NLM Gateway was released. This version includes the addition of a new collection, "Space Life Sciences Meetings," to the Meeting Abstracts category. The Space Life Sciences Meetings collection includes the meeting abstracts from the former SPACELINE database. This collection includes new data fields, such as Space Flight/Mission and NASA Investigators, not found in the other meeting abstract collections. The Space Flight/Mission field is searched when doing subject (Gateway default) or text word searching. Other new fields are not searchable, but are displayed in the expanded format. Further details on searching the NLM Gateway are available in Help on the sidebar. See Display Formats Data Elements by Collection in Help for a table of the field names and abbreviations in the Space Life Sciences Meetings collection. Watch the National Training Center and Clearinghouse Web Site for 2001 and 2002 Training ClassesSeptember 07, 2001 [posted]NLM, through the National Training Center and Clearinghouse (NTCC), offers training classes at various locations across the country. PubMed's Related Articles Display Format ModifiedSeptember 12, 2001 [posted]PubMed's popular Related Articles feature is easily accessed using the Related Articles link on citations. You can also find related items for multiple citations using the checkbox to select the citations and then choosing, "Related Articles" from the Display pull-down menu. If no citations are selected and "Related Articles" is selected from the Display pull-down menu, related items for citations displayed on the current page are retrieved. This is a change; previously the Related Articles display format was based on the full set of retrieved records. To obtain citations to related articles for a large set of citations, consider using the [This link was removed because it is no longer valid] PmNeighbor utility.

Printing with PubMedSeptember 12, 2001 [posted]The addition of the new Sort pull-down menu has lengthened the gray bar of the PubMed search results page. This, unfortunately, results in increased truncation of the right side of a page when printed. We are actively working on changes to the format of the results screen to avoid this problem. In the meantime, we want to remind users that the Text button displays search results without the sidebar menu and tool bars, so please think of this as a "printer-friendly" button, to be used to display results that will be printed. Simplified URLs for Five NLM ResourcesOctober 05, 2001 [posted]NLM has completed the implementation of new, simplified URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) for five of its Web resources: in February 2001, locatorplus.gov for LocatorPlus; in May 2001, docline.gov for DOCLINE and nnlm.gov for the Web site of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine; in June 2001, pubmed.gov for PubMed; and, most recently, pubmedcentral.gov for PubMed Central.

Renamed Buttons Corrects Printing Problem in PubMedOctober 05, 2001 [posted]The "Add to Clipboard" and "Remove from Clipboard" buttons were renamed to "Clip Add" and "Clip Remove" in PubMed. These smaller buttons help reduce the width of a page with search results. A narrower page should alleviate the problem where the text on the right side of a printed page is cut off.

Searching HSRPRoj via the NLM GatewayOctober 18, 2001 [posted]The Academy for Health Services Research and Health Policy has prepared a Web page entitled How do I search HSRProj? [THis link was removed because it is no longer valid.]. Health Services Research Projects in Progress (HSRProj) is a database providing access to ongoing grants and contracts in health services research. This web page introduces searching HSRProj via the NLM Gateway. HSRProj is a joint effort of the Academy for Health Services Research and Health Policy and the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is funded by the National Library of Medicine.

October 2001 PubMed, NLM Gateway and ClinicalTrials.gov Training Manuals Now AvailableOctober 18, 2001 [posted]The October 2001 editions of the training manuals are now available for downloading from the NLM Web site PubMed, NLM Gateway, ClinicalTrials.gov and TOXNET Training Manuals. The workbooks were updated to reflect changes to PubMed, the NLM Gateway and ClinicalTrials.gov since March 2001. The manuals are available for downloading in Portable Document Format (PDF) and Microsoft® (MS) Word formats. They are broken down into sections so you can choose the areas of interest to you. These materials correspond to the NLM's National Training Center and Clearinghouse training courses described at http://nnlm.gov/mar/online/description.html. Lecture guides used in training on Toxicology and Environmental Health Web Resources (i.e., TOXNET and ChemIDplus) are also available from this Web site. These workbooks are not copyrighted. Feel free to use any part of the workbooks -- you may customize parts for training programs, demonstrations, or workshops you conduct.

MEDLINE® Turns 30October 24, 2001 [posted]
This month we celebrate MEDLINE's 30th anniversary. Back in October 1971 when MEDLINE was introduced, it was the first "nationally available, local-call, online retrieval system" with an initial user group of 25 institutions. Today, via PubMed on the World Wide Web, MEDLINE is available for free throughout the world. The original MEDLINE file contained approximately 130,000 citations. Today MEDLINE/PubMed contains over 11 million citations from 1966 to the present.
